Aileen Jones – Slow and Steady Walking

Written in May 2022.

Is this the first U3A class you’ve tutored?

I don’t consider myself to be a tutor, more a coordinator, but ‘yes’ this is the first group I’ve taken responsibility for within Nillumbik U3A.

Other U3A classes attended?

I am currently enrolled in the Gentle Walking Group, the Friday Luncheon Group and Life Changing Events in History. I often enrol in Jane Davies’ history classes when possible – they’re very popular for good reasons. In the past, I was also enrolled in French for Beginners.

Nillumbik resident?

Yes, I live in Research.

What your students will learn?

This is a group walk so not a structured class. We will meet at various spots around the Shire to walk and, for the time being at least, basically shadow the Gentle Walking Group’s program.

Class structure?

This is a participation group of people who want to start getting out to walk. I have found the Gentle Walking Group a good way of encouraging myself to continue walking and it has also helped me to socialise. I hope that this new group might do the same for others.

Why did you volunteer to run this class?

I was missing the extra walk during the week that I had enjoyed with a friend who has moved from the area, so when the possibility of an additional walking group was mentioned and leaders were needed, I showed my interest.
