The Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador and you can only get there by plane from mainland Ecuador. Some of mainland Ecuador is in the Amazon. So, if you're going to the Galapagos Islands, you might as well also go to the Amazon. Guy Palmer went to both in 1996.

Have a look at the slides that Guy presented to our Travel class.

FWIIW ('for what it is worth'), here is Guy’s brief comparison between animal watching in the Galapagos, the Amazon and on safari:

  • In the Galapagos, you both hear a lot and see a lot because they have no fear of humans.
  • In the Amazon, you hear a lot but don’t see a lot because they hide. It’s mostly about ambience.
  • On safari, you see a lot but hear nothing. But be patient and you will see an extraordinary variety of mammals.
