Bill Naim – a longstanding tutor

An interview by Ann Madigan in October 2024.

In January 2019, Bill was interviewed by Debra Forbes for this website.

In August 2020, Bill wrote his own life story for this website.

Brought up in Egypt and educated at an international school, Bill is a polyglot as well as a tenor, prone to breaking into song during classes. He has been involved with Nillumbik U3A as a committee member, choir member and language tutor for a number of years. Currently he runs an Italian conversation class on Mondays at the Old Eltham Courthouse. I asked Bill a few questions about his tutoring.

When did you start teaching Italian at U3A?

I started teaching French language at U3A in Hurstbridge in 2011 and switched to teaching Italian in 2022, as no one taught it at the time. I began with Italian for absolute beginners, which progressed to simply Italian via Zoom due to covid. And, finally, I now have a spoken Italian class.

What do you enjoy about it?

It reminds me of the days back at home (in Egypt) when we spoke in Italian, as my mother’s background was Italian. We have about 14 students who are doing a great job to speak Italian – no one seems to want to speak in English!

What tips do you have for anyone wanting to learn Italian?

Italian is the easiest language to learn simply because you read it as it is written, therefore if you learn the alphabet (particularly the vowels) you are up and running. Almost all Italian words end with a vowel. And, as I remind everyone, each letter must be pronounced.

What’s your favourite part of Italy, and when were you last there?

I was last in Italy just pre-covid. My favourite place would have to be Taormina, being the jewel of Sicily and one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the world. It is the island’s most loved town. Its dramatic coastline, beautiful beaches, stunning views, endless entertainment and strategic position make Taormina the ideal base for a wonderful Sicilian visit for a holiday. Located at the toe of Italy’s boot, blessed with natural beauty and historical wonders, Sicily ranks as one of the safest regions in Italy.
